After a dramatic 3:3 draw in the first match in Belgium, Atlético played a much better and more specific match in front of the home crowd. Madrid took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Alexander Sørloth hit the visitors’ net after an assist from Jan Oblak.
Brugge did not give up and managed to equalize in the 36th minute through Ordóñez, and only a minute later Vetlesen had a great chance with a header, but Oblak saves his team with a great intervention.
The first half ended with a score of 1:1.
Right at the start of the second half, Atlético takes control again. In the 48th minute, Cardoso sent a precise shot from about twenty meters and gave the home team a new lead. In the 76th minute, Sørloth scored his second goal of the match, this time after an assist from Ademola Lookman.
The same player completed the hat-trick in the 86th minute by scoring for a high 4:1.
Thus, thanks to the overall result of 7:4 from two games, Atlético won a place in the round of 16, confirming the status of one of the strongest teams in the elite European competition.
