Although Arsenal is playing at a high level this season, the club is still waiting for the trophy. The team was defeated in the final of the EFL Cup with a score of 2:0, while they were surprisingly eliminated from the FA Cup by Southampton. That left them with two main competitions, the Premier League and the Champions League.
Before the game with Bournemouth, Arsenal were nine points ahead of Manchester City, with a game in hand. With the victory, they could increase the difference to 12 points and take a big step towards the title, but they lost 1:2.
After Manchester City beat Chelsea 3:0, the title race became wide open again. The key duel is played at the Etihad, where a victory for City would further complicate the situation at the top of the table.
Spain’s Mundo Deportivo reports that Arteta’s position could be seriously threatened if he ends the season without a trophy.
“After seven years at Arsenal, with a contract that runs until June 2027 and negotiations for an extension, the situation could change drastically if he does not win the Premier League or the Champions League,” it said.
“In that case, Arteta would not stay at Arsenal next season. The club’s management already has a ready candidate to replace him, namely Cesc Fabregas, who has an excellent season with Como 1907 and whose team plays very attractive football.”
