“We believe that the meetings will take place this week. We certainly hope so. The ships are passing. It’s a very, very good sign and I think the president wants a peace agreement,” Witkoff said during an address at an investment forum in Miami, Anadolia reports.
He added that by “real negotiations” he means direct talks that last until an agreement is reached.
“That’s what we offered,” he said.
Trump told reporters before his trip to Miami that Iran was seeking negotiations.
“They are devastated. They are talking, we are talking, now they want to reach an agreement,” he said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington expects the military campaign against Iran to be over “in weeks, not months” and that the US can achieve its goals without sending ground forces.
The US and Israel have been carrying out airstrikes against Iran since February 28, killing more than 1,340 people. Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq and the Gulf countries where US military facilities are located, causing casualties and property damage and disrupting global markets and air traffic.
Since the beginning of the conflict, at least 13 members of the American armed forces have died, and the war has led to an increase in energy prices and disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
