According to FlightAware, which monitors air traffic in US airspace, 1,659 flights were canceled across the country on Friday – nearly 10 times more than the previous day.
A winter storm warning remained in effect for the region until Saturday afternoon. Freezing rain is also forecast in some locations. The storm hit New York during the post-Christmas rush hour, when millions of people are on the move. The National Meteorological Service has forecast that up to 13 centimeters of snow will fall in the city, and up to 28 centimeters of snow is expected in areas north and northeast of the city, reports Hina.

City officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay home when possible. According to media reports, the storm could bring the city’s heaviest snowfall in three years.
FlightAware said New York’s three main airports – John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International in neighboring New Jersey – were among the hardest hit, with a total of 886 flights canceled as of Friday.

Airport authorities have advised passengers via Platform X to contact their airlines before heading to the airport. Dozens of additional cancellations were reported at airports in Philadelphia and Baltimore, as well as in Toronto, Canada’s largest business center.
