At least ten people died in a big fire that broke out in the Pensioners’ Home in Tuzla. The frightening fact is that the floors where the fire broke out were occupied by demented persons with severe forms of cancer.
Already in the first hours after the fire, the public asked the question of whose decision it was and based on what logic to place elderly people with dementia or cancer on the fifth, sixth or seventh floor of the building.
The users of the home and their families, as well as certain politicians in Tuzla, have been warning about the bad conditions in the Home for Pensioners for years, but the authorities remained deaf to their appeals and warnings.
Despite warnings about poor conditions, the administration led by director Mirsad Bakalović (SDP) in January made a decision to increase the price of accommodation by as much as 30 percent.
Less than two months ago, the councilwoman of Our Party in the Tuzla City Council, Dragana Gagro Berberović, drew the public’s attention to the conditions in which the users of the Tuzla Retirement Home live. The published video and photos alarmed the public, and the management of the Retirement Home initiated proceedings against Gagro Berberović.
“The administration had more than enough time to improve the situation and thus not allow cries for a dignified life and work to reach politicians and the entire public,” Our Party warned at the time.
At that time, they pointed out that pointing out humidity, untidiness, poor quality of food, mobbing, insults, dissatisfaction of users are not a media sensation, but issues of dignity and human rights.
It should also be pointed out that there were earlier postings and recordings of inadequate behavior of staff towards users of the home on social networks.
Those responsible and competent for the Tuzla Retirement Home will have to explain to the public the decisions regarding the accommodation of the users of this institution, as well as the poor conditions. The investigation will show what caused the fire and whether someone failed in the chain of responsibility, it says Klix.
