Due to a complex fracture of the lower leg, she underwent four operations, and the fifth one is expected soon in the USA. After returning home, Vonn addressed the public with an emotional message.
The 2010 Olympic champion announced that she still can’t stand on her own. “I haven’t been on my feet in over seven days… since the race I’ve been lying motionless in a hospital bed. Even though I can’t stand yet, it feels amazing to be home again,” Vonn wrote on social network X.
It is a severe fracture of the lower leg, in which the bone is broken into several parts. Because of this, she was fitted with an external fixator, a support frame that stabilizes the bone. Her surgeon, dr. Stefano Zanarella, described the situation as a “medically sensitive situation” which has since been brought under control.
In the first weeks, the leg must not be loaded in order to avoid the movement of the fracture or loosening of the screws, so Vonn will need patience before getting back on her feet, reports Index.hr.
Vonn was discharged from Ca’Foncello Hospital in Treviso on Sunday morning. From there, she was transported by ambulance to Marco Polo Airport in Venice, from where she traveled to the USA.
