The capital of Austria, Vienna, is building a huge closed tank of drinking water, which will guarantee the security of water supply for a population of millions.
According to the city administration, in Neusiedl am Steinfeld in Lower Austria, the world’s largest closed reservoir of drinking water is currently being built. After the expansion of the facility, which has existed since the 1950s and was the largest of its kind until now, the reservoir is planned to provide about one billion liters of drinking water.
Construction began in 2025, and new photos show massive concrete pillars rising above the ground. Below the surface, the walls of the four planned water chambers are 11 meters high.

In total, about 35,000 cubic meters of concrete will be used during the construction, and the costs of the first phase of the works amount to about 98 million euros, according to the Heute.at portal.
Jürgen Czernohorszky, Vienna’s climate councilor (SPÖ), calls the new reservoir “the project of the century”. It is part of the “Vienna Water 205” strategy, the goal of which is to provide future generations with high-quality drinking water at all times.
Currently, Vienna holds the record for the largest closed reservoir of drinking water, while the largest open reservoir in the world is the Caribbean, located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. Kariba contains 180 billion cubic meters of water and is primarily used for the production of electricity in the region.
