US Vice President JD Vance is the first choice of this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) attendees for the next Republican nominee for US President, according to unofficial voting results released on Saturday.
About 53 percent of the more than 1,600 rally attendees voted for Vance, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio came in second with 35 percent of the vote. CPAC, which this year is being held in Grapevine, Texas, brings together the largely conservative wing of the Republican Party.
While CPAC’s annual unofficial vote doesn’t guarantee a final nominee, the poll shows the mood among key supporters of former President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. Trump, currently serving his second term, will not be eligible to run in 2028.
At last year’s CPAC in Maryland, Vance also led with 61 percent of the vote, followed by Steve Bannon at 12 percent and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at seven percent. Rubio won just three percent last year, but has seen a significant increase in support in this poll, thanks in part to his role in high-risk foreign operations.
The results suggest that conservative support is consolidating around Vance and Rubio this year, with no other candidate exceeding two percent of the vote.
