Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said there remains a “fundamental disagreement” with President Donald Trump’s administration, which wants US control of the territory.
Rasmussen emphasized that talks with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were “honest and constructive”, but that positions remain different. Denmark believes that the security of Greenland should be ensured within the existing political and constitutional framework, respecting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
It was agreed to establish a high-level working group that will try to find a “common path” in the coming weeks.
At the same time, European countries are sending soldiers to Greenland.
Germany will send 13 soldiers to Greenland on a reconnaissance mission with other European countries, the German government and the Ministry of Defense of this country announced.
The mission, which comes at the request of Denmark, will take place from Thursday to Saturday. Its aim is to explore possible military contributions to strengthening the region’s security, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, which could include maritime control.
It follows a statement by the Danish armed forces that there will be an “expanded military presence in and around Greenland”, including aircraft, vessels and soldiers from NATO allies.
Earlier, Sweden sent soldiers to Greenland today following a request from Denmark, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on the X social network, without specifying how many soldiers were sent on the mission.
He said the Swedish officers will be part of a group of soldiers from other allied countries preparing together for an upcoming exercise called “Operation Arctic Endurance”.
Denmark’s defense ministry previously said it was increasing its military presence in Greenland due to “security tensions”.
