Stocks on Wall Street opened sharply lower, joining a global market slide, as investors worry about the impact of the US-Israeli war against Iran, further pushing up oil prices and inflation.
All three major indices were firmly in the red for several minutes after the open:
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7% to 48,066.36 points.
- The broad-based S&P 500 lost 1.7% to 6,767.35 points.
- The technology-oriented Nasdaq Composite Index decreased by 2.0% to 22,305.35 points.
Iran, the third-largest producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), produces about 4.5% of global oil supplies, adding to market concerns.
