The United Nations (the UN) confirmed today that the Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)’s Office will reduce its overall labor force by 20 percent due to lack of funding.
UN Humanitarian Help Tom Fletcher sent a letter to the ocha staff late Thursday.
“Our partners, non-governmental organizations and the UN humanitarian family are affected. And we are affected, the financial gap in 2025. is nearly $ 60 million to protect our mission,” he still added:
“As a result, we will reduce our overall workforce by 20 percent.”
When asked about the letter, the UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at the press conference to reduce labor, as a result of reducing funding, not due to reductions.
“Some of the cuts came from the US. Some came from other countries,” Dujarric said, adding that the UN funding source is very transparent, especially for humanitarian programs.
Last month, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced structural adaptations in their global operations in response to the decrease in estimated donor funding for this year of 30 percent, including significant reductions in the U.S. projects.
More than 6,000 staff members around the world will be affected by a lack of funding, and the organization will also reduce the number of staff in their seat by about 20 percent, or over 250 employees, it announced.
The cuts come due to the effort of administration of the US President Donald Trump to abolish USAID, funded by humanitarian programs around the world, as well as other services that help people in the US and beyond.
Critics say that one-sided abolition of funding by Trump’s executive is illegal, because for exclusion of money or the abolition of the Government, the U.S. Congress is required.
