In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said they “have established a framework for a future deal regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region.”
“Based on that understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were supposed to go into effect on February 1,” Trump said, adding that further discussions on the Golden Dome project would continue.
Norwegian Finance Minister and former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said to CNN that it was “important” that Trump ruled out the possibility of using military force to annex Greenland.
“Of course, it is an important message because until now many feared that he might indeed threaten to use force to take over Greenland. The territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark must be respected by all,” Stoltenberg said.
He also pointed out that politicians should be careful in communicating with each other through messages because “they can become public”.
The announcement comes after Trump posted messages on social media earlier this week from other world leaders, including Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and French President Emmanuel Macron.
