According to him, this is just the beginning, as additional sales are expected to be realized in the coming days and weeks.
The transaction was first reported by the portal Semafor, stating that the money from the sale is kept in special bank accounts controlled by the US government, including one account opened in Qatar.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said President Trump was instrumental in reaching what she called a “historic energy deal with Venezuela,” which came shortly after the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, whom she called a narco-terrorist. According to her, the agreement will benefit both the American and Venezuelan people.
Rogers added that intense talks are underway with American oil companies that are interested in investing in Venezuela.
“Trump’s team is actively working to establish a constructive dialogue with American energy companies that are ready to make unprecedented investments in the reconstruction of the Venezuelan oil infrastructure. The president resolutely protects the Western Hemisphere from abuses coming from drug cartels, drug smugglers and foreign hostile actors,” she said.
The sale marks the first such move since the United States ousted Maduro earlier this month.
Trump has already announced that American energy companies will play a significant role in the exploitation of Venezuela’s huge oil reserves. Last week, he hosted the heads of several leading American oil companies in the White House, further emphasizing the strategic importance of this process.
