“In the nearly 80 years of the existence of the State of Israel, this recognition has never been given to a person who is not Israeli. This year, we have decided to give it to President Trump,” Netanyahu said.
He added that the award was given “for his enormous contribution to Israel and the Jewish people.”
Trump said that the news about the award surprised him and that it was a great honor for him. “I am truly surprised and extremely honored,” said the US president.
Trump and Netanyahu met in Florida, where they discussed the deadlock in the ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip, but also security issues related to Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
In an address to the press, Trump emphasized that he still strongly supports the Israeli prime minister, despite criticism from some allies who believe that Netanyahu is slow to implement certain points of the agreed truce from October.
“We resolved three difficult issues related to Gaza in just five minutes,” Trump said, stressing that the conversation with Netanyahu was constructive and concrete.
