Donald Trump’s administration is asking countries that want permanent membership in his new Peace Council to contribute at least $1 billion, Bloomberg reports. Under the draft charter for the proposal, Trump would serve as the board’s first chairman and decide who can serve, and all decisions would be subject to his approval.
The board is described as “an international organization that promotes stability, lawful governance and lasting peace in regions affected or threatened by conflict.” It would become official after the three states agree to the charter. Trump would also approve the board’s official seal and have the power to remove members, subject to a veto by two-thirds of the other members.
The plan also includes the formation of a special committee for Gaza, with invited leaders such as Argentine President Javier Miley and Canadian Mark Carney. The move drew criticism, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said it was not coordinated with his country.
Critics believe that Trump is trying to create an alternative or rival organization to the United Nations. Some European countries have expressed strong opposition to the draft charter, particularly because of the control over funds that would be in Trump’s hands.
The board would hold annual voting as well as quarterly non-voting executive committee meetings. On Friday, Trump announced the first executive panel, which includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, before forming the full committee.
