“Tens of thousands of Christians” are being killed in Nigeria, Trump said on WABC radio, adding that he had warned the Nigerian government of the consequences.
“I said yesterday, ‘Attack them on Christmas. That will be a Christmas present,’” Trump said.
He confirmed that US forces had “strongly” attacked ISIS in various locations, calling the terrorist group “terrible” and “butchers”.
“They were really hit hard yesterday. They got a very bad Christmas present,” he said.
The United States carried out strikes against ISIS targets in northwestern Nigeria on Thursday, Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that it had launched strikes “at the request of Nigerian authorities” in Sokoto state, “killing multiple ISIS terrorists”, according to a post on the US-based company X’s social network.
Nigeria confirmed early on Friday that it is continuing to cooperate with the US on security issues to counter the ongoing threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
