According to local media, the program of the visit will be filled with numerous contents, including discussions on the second phase of the cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
It will be the fifth meeting between Trump and Netanyahu in the United States of America since the Republican president returned to the White House almost a year ago.
“Netanyahu will probably come to visit me in Florida,” Trump said in mid-December, referring to his luxury Mar-a-Lago residence.
– He wants to see me – he added.
Talks about Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Gaza
According to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, the two leaders will discuss Iran, Israel’s sworn enemy, following a brief war between the two countries in June.
They are also expected to discuss Syria, the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, as well as the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The US administration and regional mediators, led by Egypt and Qatar, are calling for the process to be accelerated to begin the second phase of the agreement.
The truce, under the US peace plan, in October halted a deadly two-year conflict triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
A fragile truce in the Gaza Strip
However, the truce remains fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violating it.
The second phase of the agreement envisages the disarmament of the Palestinian movement, the gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from all of Gaza, the establishment of a transitional administration and the deployment of international stabilization forces.
Before entering into negotiations on these sensitive issues, Israel is demanding the return of the body of the last hostage in Gaza, police officer Ran Gwili. Hamas claims that it has not yet been able to locate him.
According to the American portal Axios, which refers to White House officials, the Trump administration wants to announce a government of Palestinian technocrats, or a transitional administration for Gaza, as soon as possible.
The portal states that senior US officials are “increasingly frustrated with Netanyahu’s actions that are undermining the fragile truce and peace process.”
