In Lima, at least one person was killed and more than 60 people were injured when a wall collapsed at the “Alejandro Villanueva” stadium in that city, according to local media.
Peru’s Ministry of Health states that part of the grandstand structure collapsed and that the investigation is ongoing, but that they are not ready to provide any additional information at this time.
CNN noted that the tragedy occurred during the Catholic Easter holiday gathering of fans, which served as a prelude to the weekend’s match between Alianza Lima and Universitario.
It is still not entirely clear how the wall itself came down. At first, many thought it was an accidenthowever, the firefighters at the scene denied that part of the stand had collapsed.
Some local media even write that it is there was a confrontation between two groups of fans and that after that there was a general stampede in which many fans were run over in the crowd.
Minister of Health Juan Carlos Velasco he confirmed that three minors were among the injured, as well as many women. Because of all this, a state of emergency was declared in hospitals in Lima in order to take care of the injured as soon as possible, he reports Telegraf.rs.
