Three people were killed and 60 others injured after remnants of the ousted regime attacked security forces and civilians during protests in Lattakia on Sunday.
The health directorate told the Syrian news agency SANA that the injuries included stabbings, stone-pelting and gunfire aimed at security officials and civilians. Two dispensaries were damaged during the unrest, but medical teams continue to provide emergency care.
SANA reports that security forces were deployed at key locations, including al-Azhari and al-Zira’a roundabouts in Lattakia, as well as in Jableh, to ensure the safety of participants and protect public order.
Colonel Abdulaziz al-Ahmad, Lattakia’s head of internal security, said “elements linked to the remnants of the ousted regime” participating in protests called by Ghazal Ghazal attacked internal security forces, injuring several people and damaging official vehicles.
Al-Ahmad added that armed and masked individuals linked to the “Saraya Deraa al-Sahel” and “Saraya al-Jawad” groups, which are responsible for targeted killings and planting explosives along the M1 highway, were present at the protests.
During the protest at al-Azhari Roundabout, masked gunmen reportedly fired into the air, while security forces managed to contain the situation and restore order. Forces remained deployed throughout the main streets and squares to protect citizens and property.
Since the fall of the ousted regime, loyalist groups have rejected the current political and institutional order, attempting to incite violence by using civilian protests as a cover for attacks on security forces and damage to public property.
