The message from the Norwegian and Finnish officials was sent to Trump on January 18 at 15:48 and was signed “Alex and Jonas”. In it, they referred to several current global issues and called for calming tensions. The letter reads in its entirety:
“Dear Mr. President, dear Donald – about contact across the Atlantic, about Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine – and your customs announcement yesterday.
You know our position on these matters. But we believe we should all work to de-escalate this – there is so much going on around us and we need to unite.
We suggest calling you later today, with both of us or separately, tell us which you would prefer!

According to VG, the American president’s response came very quickly, at 4:15 p.m. on the same day. Trump’s letter, addressed to the Norwegian prime minister, has also been published in full and reads:
“Dear Jonas: Since your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping more than eight wars, I no longer feel obligated to think exclusively about peace, although it will always be dominant, but now I can think about what is good and right for the United States of America.”
The publication of the complete correspondence caused stormy reactions, and part of the public considers Trump’s response as unusual and inappropriate in diplomatic communication between close allies. VG states that the fact that the issue of the Nobel Peace Prize was used as an argument in political correspondence with the head of government of the country in which the prize is awarded is particularly problematic in Norway.
