The plan presented the government over the weekend, and was contained in the long-awaited strategic overview that will be published on Monday, Sky News writes.
However, the announcement does not include key details – it is not known when the first factory will be built, when the first projectile will be produced, or exactly the exact types of weapons. The government has not yet appointed a person who would take over the function of the National Arms Director and lead the entire project. Andy Start, who is currently running a defensive equipment and support – the body in charge of military procurement – temporarily holds the extended duty, while the process of employing the external candidate is still delayed.
The Ministry of Defense in advance has revealed part of the content of the future document, stating that the defense examination would recommend “permanent capacity to produce ammunition”.
The plan is envisaged and increasing the stock of ammunition – which is crucial to keep the British army, the Navy and Aviation operations longer than a few days.
The government states that 1.5 billion pounds will be invested only in new factories, and that the total consumption on ammunition in the parliamentary conference will reach 6 billion pounds, index.hr.
“A difficult acquired lessons from Putin’s illegal aggression in Ukraine showed that the army is as strong as the industry behind it,” Defense Minister John Healey said on Saturday night.
“We strengthen the British industrial basis in order to more effectively deterred your opponents and ensure stability at home and strength abroad,” he added.
As part of the new plan, the Government states that they will build at least six new factories for the production of ammunition and energy materials – which includes explosives, propulsions and pyrotechnics needed in weapon production. However, it is not known whether these factories will be built as state projects or in cooperation with defense companies, nor is the time frame or location released.
It was also announced that UK would buy “up to 7,000 domestic long-range projectiles for British armed forces”, but neither are the specific types of weapons. According to available information, it is a combination of missiles, rockets and drones.
