In his rich coaching career, Piontek took the Danish national team to the World Championship for the first time in its history in 1986.
“Sepp will forever be remembered as one of the most respected coaches in Danish history,” the Danish Football Association (DBU) announced.
Piontek died in his second homeland, Denmark, after a short illness.
In his playing career, Piontek played for Werder Bremen, with whom he won the German championship in 1965. After his career ended due to an injury, he also coached Bremen and managed Fortuna Düsseldorf, St. Pauli and the Haitian national team. In 1979, he took over the Danish national team, with which seven years later he qualified for the World Championship in Mexico, where he reached the round of 16.
He left the position of selector in 1990, and after that he continued to train in Turkey and Greenland.
