The elementary school complex is located in close proximity to a military base of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), from which it is separated only by a wall, further complicating an independent investigation into the real targets of this devastating attack.
Although Iranian officials directly blame the United States and Israel for the massacre, neither side has so far claimed responsibility.
The Israeli military said it had no knowledge of any operations in the area, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington was still investigating the incident in detail, stressing that US forces never target civilian objects.
Independent verification of these claims on the ground is drastically hampered by the complete shutdown of the Internet imposed by the Iranian authorities.
Horrific footage from the immediate aftermath of the attack, confirmed by the BBC, shows widespread panic as desperate families search the rubble. On the videos, columns of thick black smoke can be seen rising above the school building, and rescue teams found the bodies of the victims among the concrete remains, blood-stained backpacks and children’s books.
How brutal the attack was is evidenced by aerial photographs taken three days later, which show neatly arranged rows with at least a hundred freshly dug graves.
Satellite photos captured by Planet Labs reveal destruction on an incredible scale. Analysts have identified at least five objects with deep craters, which according to military expert NR Jenzen-Jones indicates multiple, almost simultaneous impacts.
Experts from McKenzie Intelligence Services believe that specific damage to the ground floor of the two-story school building suggests the use of specialized munitions designed to penetrate deeper, underground levels.
Although the theory appeared on social networks that the tragedy was caused by a faulty Iranian missile, Western military analysts completely rejected this possibility, stating that damage of this scale does not match the warheads of Iranian surface-to-air missiles.
