Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Omani counterpart in Muscat on Friday, ahead of talks with the United States mediated by Oman.
Araghchi and Badr al-Busaidi “discussed the most important bilateral, regional and international issues,” Iran’s Mehr news agency reported, which published a photo of the two diplomats sitting at a table with their national flags.
Iran and the United States were preparing for talks in Oman on Friday, with Washington looking for any prospect of diplomatic progress on Iran’s nuclear program and other issues, refusing to rule out military action.
The talks – which both sides finally confirmed on Wednesday after uncertainty over location, timing and format – will be the first such meeting between the two foes since the United States joined Israel’s war against the Islamic Republic in June with attacks on nuclear facilities.
President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Araghchi are expected to lead their respective delegations to the talks in the discreet Gulf sultanate, which has occasionally acted as a mediator between the countries, Reuters reports.
