The growing “Putinization” of Hungary

Criminalization of homosexuality, tolerance of neoanacists, populism … and the opposition will be “liquidated as a styen.” Orban no longer chooses the words or methods – because they are elections next spring.

Resurgence due to prohibition of Pride in Hungary: Critics accuse Viktor Orban for “Fascism” and that more and more approaches the Putin model of the rule. The Prime Minister has another goal: to draw attention from corruption scandals in his system.

Uniforms of the Vermacht, Russian flags, SS symbols, the letter Z, hook crosses – hundreds of neo-nation are marching in the center of Budapest, near the Buddim Trap. The official residence of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is not far away. Thus, neonacristic gathering in February 2025 appeared, and it is held in Budapest every year at the time.

In Hungary, it is illegal to demonstrate in uniform and carry totalitarian symbols, but Orbanovi government allows neo-Nacists and Putin’s supporters to march unpunished every year.

There is a different situation in the case of so-called “LGBTQ-propaganda”. Thus, e.g. One bookstore in Budapest in July 2023. received a sentence of 32,000 euros, because he held a comic on two gay boys on the shelf, which was also visible and minors. This is considered “LGBTQ-propaganda” in Hungary and is forbidden, DW is written.

“To liquidate the army from the shadow”

Using the child protection argument, Orban’s most in parliament has now also banned the “pride parade”, the march of quir-persons who promote diversity and tolerance. The constitutional amendment that predicts it quickly went through the parliament, and only a few hours later, President Tamaš Šujok signed the law.

This means that public gatherings are no longer allowed to emphasize quir-symbols such as the flags of rainbow colors, where sexuality is as if it is the “self of the purpose” or people are getting “different from half. A fine for the misdemeanor is a fine in height of up to 550 euros, which is slightly less than the minimum earnings in Hungary.

Prohibition of Prude is only the last episode in the new Viktor Orban’s offensive against his alleged or real critics and opponents. The Hungarian Prime Minister promises “great cleansing to Easter”. The last time he said that in his speech on 15. March, for the National Feast of Hungary.

The critics then called “the Bedsmiths” that will be “liquidated”: “We will liquidate the financial machine that bought politicians, judges, journalists and political activists. We will liquidate the whole army from the shadow.”

The dehumanization of the critics of government

In Hungary, all those who think differently than Orban have already been used to much of the prime minister. Last Sundays, for example, government campaign against alleged corrupt recipients of USAID funds have been launched with unprecedented intensity. Orbanova Propaganda Agencija, “Office for Sovereignty”, for example, accuses the popular independent newspaper portal that is financed from foreign sources such as USAID and that in this way, the parties are represented, that he has committed to betrayal.

Therefore, they are accustomed – but what is now called the “Badenica” shocked even opposition politicians and independent journalists. Many assess that in the work “dehumanization” of all critics of government, that it is “fascism in the rise” and “Fast Putinization” Hungary.

This is still the first time that Orban used such rhetoric. The term “pest control” is equally reminiscent of the language used by German Nazis and Soviet Stalinists in the 1930s of the last century. A prominent Hungarian political source Gabor Torok, who is rather careful in their estimates, describes Orban’s speech about “Bars” as “borders” – which, would, in the end, could harm and his party itself.

Dissatisfaction with Orban is growing

In fact, Orbanovo is currently “great cleansing” is his tactical maneuvering, but also an expression of fear of loss of government. For some time, the dissatisfaction of the Prime Minister and his so-called “order of national cooperation” increases. At this point, there are signs that show that the possibility of the government is possible in the parliamentary elections in the spring 2026.

Although the Hungarian economy is not in a serious crisis, it is still struggling to emerge from the problem. Inflation is high and especially affected citizens with average incomes. The measures that the government tries to oppose it, such as the freezing prices, or are not effective or not helping those who really need it.

The Customs War of the American President Donald Trump could be Hungary, which is very dependent on the German automotive industry, to push in the right crisis. In addition, Hungarian education, health care and public infrastructure are in poor condition. During that time, the Football Fanatik Orban invests in giant stadiums and sports facilities.

Corruption and nepotism

It also becomes more clearly as the Orban system is corrupt and to which members of his family, party friends and political allies are benefit from the prevailing nepotism. Recently Research Journalists Portal Develek39 published the film “Dynasty” that talks about the stunning rise of the Orban family from quite bad circumstances, to the dynasty of Billionaires – a rise that is binding to Orban’s political function. The film has so far seen three and a half million people, of 9.5 million people of Hungary.

This Sunday DIREKT36 has published another report on corruption and malfunction – this time on the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) by Hungarian Đerđ Matolči, which enabled its family, and especially the luxurious life using MNB and through the opaque structure of the Foundation. This case is also investigated by the Hungarian audit court (ASZ).

Dissatisfaction because of all this is reflected in the success of the opposition politician of Peter Hungarians. That apostate from Orban’s system, almost unknown to just a year, now achieves increasing success in public opinion research with their Party Tisa (respect and freedom). Meanwhile, Tisa is obviously in front of the Orban Party Fides, and Hungaria is currently the most popular politician.

How long will Orban go?

In the nature of the system, such as that Hungarian prime minister, is that there is increasingly going towards authoritarianism and dictatorship. If a change in the government in Hungary, the Orban and his circle of powerful and oligarch would face expropriation, charges and prison sentences. From that perspective, it seems logical that the Orban is currently a wholesome stream of escalation spiral. For example, it is discussed about the denatalization of those critics of regimes that have dual citizenship. The goal is not only to silence critics in Hungary, but also, in the eve of the parliamentary elections, the maximum polarization of society is achieved.

It remains to be seen whether the Orban “Liquidation of the Babel” also implies the undertaking of physical actions against its most dangerous opponents, for example through stagnated accidents, poisonings, or murders such as those in Russia, the close partner of Hungary. Peter Hungar is still “just” a daily topic in Orban’s propaganda media.

These days, however, that opposition politician has hinted that he was already under surveillance. And that day. Under the photo on Facebook on which he and his new girlfriend, he wrote: “Dear propagandists, you don’t have to freeze behind the car and bother the neighbors. Yes, she + I = we.” Behind that text, he put an emoticon with two hands that form the heart.
