According to the latest information from the competent institutions of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, after snowfall and melting of snow in higher areas, there is a slight increase in the water level of rivers and there is a further risk of overflowing, torrential flows, flooding of lower areas and possible landslides in the area of Sarajevo Canton, Herzegovina-Neretva, Bosnia-Podrinje, Una-Sana and Posavina Cantons, announced today, January 9, from the FBiH Government.
As they reminded, the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute issued an orange warning for the central, eastern and northern areas of Bosnia. Minimum air temperatures will range from -14 to -10 °C. According to the FHMZ forecast, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, snow is expected in most of the country, while it will rain in the south. Before noon in the lowlands, the occurrence of ice-frozen rain is possible. More precipitation is expected in the central and eastern areas (5-15 cm of new snow), and up to 20 cm in the mountains.
Due to low temperatures and expected rainfall, FUCZ appeals to cantonal and municipal civil protection services to continuously visit the most threatened areas and, if necessary, immediately activate protection and rescue forces, in accordance with plans and competencies, in order to protect people and material goods.
Information from BIHAMK indicates that the condition of the roads is difficult, especially in the western and mountainous regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Snowfall makes traffic in urban areas even more difficult.
The Federal Administration of Civil Protection appeals to employers and public institutions to fulfill their legal obligations in such weather conditions and contribute to the smooth movement and safety of citizens.
“The Federal Administration of Civil Protection also continuously monitors the situation through the Federal Operations Center, collects information, assesses the situation and the need to provide assistance in the form of funds and equipment. It is in constant communication with the cantonal and municipal civil protection services, in order to provide the most effective response in the event of the need for the engagement of operational forces.
