The European Commission threatened Hungary for restriction of NGO work

The European Commission has threatened to take measures against Hungary if the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán adopts the controversial law to limit the work of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The introduction of the Law on “Transparency in Public Life would introduce strict regulations for non-governmental organizations that receive financial resources from abroad, which are considered to threat to the sovereignty of Hungary.

The draft law, which submitted the Hungarian parliament, filed Orbánova Conservative, the Nationalist Party Fidesz, according to the Commission, is a serious violation of the rights of the European Union. The EU Executive Body called on Hungary to withdraw a draft from the legislative procedure.

If the law is adopted, as expected, the Commission led by President Ursula von der Leyen announced that he would not hesitate to take the necessary steps.

The Commission may initiate special procedures for such violations, which may lead to high fines for Member States not adhering to EU rights.

NGOs are threatening to ban work

Compared to the existing legislation in Russia, the draft law enables the placement of non-governmental organizations that receive funds from abroad, which may affect public opinion, on the black list.

In the future, such organizations could receive financial support from abroad only with the approval of the country’s tax administration in which they operate.

If the organization is financed in other ways, the state is obliged to pay a fine of 25 times higher than the received amount, otherwise it will be forbidden to work and will be dissolved.

Non-governmental organizations are bodies that operate independent of the governments in the areas of human rights, environmental, health and other important segments of society. Famous examples include doctors without borders (IMF), Amnesty International and Greenpeace.

Orbán, who in his forehead, at his forehead, has repeatedly entered the conflicts with the European Union, faces increasingly pressure on the eve of the parliamentary elections scheduled for April next year.
