The European Union wants to end its dependence on the import of Russian gas, including liquefied gas, by the end of 2027, published in the European Commission.
The Commission published a plan on gradual removal of Russian oil, gas and nuclear energy from the EU market to take place coordinated, HINA transmits.
The EC will publish the legislative proposal for the prohibition of new contracts and termination of existing short-term gas supply contracts through gas pipelines and russian companies that would take effect by the end of 2025.
This will reduce the supply of Russian gas for one third of the Russian gas. After that, the import of Russian gas and by the end of 2027 will be gradually reduced in the next two years. The Union would definitely stop being dependent on Russian gas.
“Now is the time for Europe to completely interrupt their energy ties with an unreliable supplier. Energy that comes to our citizens’ war against Ukraine. We owe to our citizens,” said the president of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen.
From the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has significantly reduced the import of Russian gas through the gas pipeline. In 2021, 45 percent of gas spent in the EU was from Russia, and in 2024. It was reduced to 19 percent.
On the other hand, the EU continued to import Russian liquefied gas.
This year, a rapid growth of global supply of liquefied gas is expected, while gas demand will decrease.
With the full implementation of the energy transition framework and an Action Plan for accessible energy, it is expected to replace up to 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which means reducing demand for 40-50 billion cubic meters until 2027. years. Years.
At the same time, LNG capacities are expected to increase by about 200 billion cubic meters by 2028, which is five times more than the current import of Russian gas in the EU, the Commission said.
It will endeavor in cooperation with Member States to ensure that the abolition of russian energy imports pass gradually and well coordinated. The Member States will request that by the end of the year, the national plans in which it will state how it will contribute to the gradual abolition of Russian gas imports, nuclear energy and oil.
The Commission Plan also envisions measures in the field of oil imports, whose share has already fallen from 27 percent in early 2022. At currently three percent because of European sanctions.
Among other things, the EC plans additional measures aimed at the so-called shade fleet. These are ships under the flags of third countries used by Russia to bypass the price limit for the export of Russian oil to third countries.
The next month, the Commission will also publish legislative proposals in the field of nuclear energy that will include measures related to the import of Urania, enriched Uranium and other nuclear raw materials from Russia.
