The tournament traditionally organized by Judo Club Željezničar in memory of the late Vinko Šamarlić, its member and hero of the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, confirmed this time that it is among the best limited tournaments for younger categories in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.
The competition was officially opened in the “Goran Čengić” hall by Omer Osmanović, Minister of Veteran Affairs of Sarajevo Canton and a former member of the Detachment Bosnia unit, whose member was the unsuspecting Bosnian Olympian Vinko Šamarlić, for whom the defense of the homeland was more important than the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where he was supposed to carry the flag of our country.
The present young judokas, despite their many obligations, were greeted by the mayor of Sarajevo, Samir Avdić, and among the many guests and dignitaries was Ilija Šamarlić, the son of the late Vinko, as well as several of Vinko’s former colleagues from the RBiH MUP unit.
From the youngest to the oldest, young judokas showed that this sport has a perspective in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this time the organizer also made an effort to give everyone who responded to the tournament.
– Year after year we try to improve the organization of the tournament because the name of our Vinko Šamarlić deserves it. I sincerely hope that everyone who was in the “Goran Čengić” hall today could notice how much effort and work we put in to bring the tournament to an enviable level this year as well – said Amer Mehičević, director of the Željezničar Judo Club.
Željezničar emphasized that the time has come to think about the possibility of a two-day tournament, and the introduction of a competition for juniors from the next edition of the Šamarlić memorial.
In the end, it is worth emphasizing that the title of the overall winner was taken by the “Braća Lukač” Judo club, which also triumphed the previous year. The second place went to the Olimp team, while the third place in the overall standings was taken by the Travnik team.
