The attacks began on Saturday morning with the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which shocked both his supporters and opponents. Since then, military and strategic locations have been the target of attacks day and night.
The authorities blocked the internet, which made it much more difficult for citizens to communicate with the outside world.
Despite the restrictions, the BBC was able to speak to some of the people, whose names have been changed for security.
Hossein from the town of Karaj, west of the capital Tehran, said a powerful explosion occurred near his home on Monday.
“They hit Karaj so hard that the house shook. I heard a strong explosion and I’m just trying to find a safe place,” he said.
He added that it followed a night of intense bombing.
“I counted 17 explosions in a row. People are waiting and worried about what will happen next, apart from the attacks themselves. Their biggest concern is that America will reach a deal with the Iranian leadership and withdraw.
“Last night there were many pro-government supporters on the streets, but their faces showed that they were angry. Security forces are patrolling at night to intimidate people. Bakeries and gas stations are full.
“The streets are not busy, people are at home, but the current internet situation has caused outrage. This is the third time this year that the regime has shut down the internet.”
Hossein added that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) still has strong control on the ground, which is causing fear among some.
“I think the death of Khamenei, as well as the fact that many people have been killed during recent protests, has further deepened the gap between supporters and opponents of the government.”
Amir, who lives in Tehran, said people were stockpiling food and supplies.
“We bought and prepared everything we could. We sit at home and listen to the explosions when they hit the targets. But we are cut off from the world.
“It all depends on how many key people will be killed, but we fear that the authorities may reach a deal.”
“There are many security checkpoints throughout the city where they stop people they consider suspicious.
“As during the 12-day war with Israel last June, we are tired. Very tired. The death of Khamenei is not enough – the whole regime must go.”
