The highest syrian diplomat met on Thursday with high American officials in Washington, which is his first visit to the capital of the United States.
The Foreign Minister Asad Al-Shaibani was photographed during the meeting in the US Department of Finance, and also met with members of the Capitol Hill.
After the meeting with the Syrian Foreign Minister, the President of the Committee on the Foreign Relations of the American Senate, Jim Risch, said the meeting was productive.
In posting on the X platform, Risch said they discussed the steps needed to give Syria full access to the international economy.
– Syria has the opportunity to build a stable democracy, something that the region is desperately needed, and I hope they are on the right track – he said.
On the other hand, the leading democratist in the Committee, Jeanne Shaheen, said that the Syrian economy was in crisis and that it needs financial resources to maintain basic management functions.
Al-Shaibani is the first Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs visited by Washington in more than 25 years. Under Assad’s regime, Syria was marked as a state sponsor of terrorism.
After the overthrow of Assad’s regime in December last year, the Trump Administration expressed readiness to help the new Syrian government in success. In this context, President Donald Trump abolished all sanctions Syria.
During the visit, Al-Shaibani will discuss the status of these decisions and transfer what Damascus did to meet the obligations taken to Washington.
Next week, Al-Shaibani will join Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaai at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Al-Sharaa will thus become the first Syrian president who addressed the UN in the last few decades.
