15 French soldiers have arrived in Greenland, and they are joined by members of forces from Germany, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom as part of a reconnaissance mission. Today, Germany also sent an A400M transport plane with 13 soldiers, which will remain until Saturday, as part of the “Operation Arctic Endurance” exercises. Danish officials stress that the goal is to strengthen NATO’s presence in the Arctic and establish a rotating military presence.
Trump has said that the United States needs Greenland for national security, not ruling out the possibility of force. French President Emmanuel Macron announced an additional reinforcement of the contingent, while Poland still refuses to participate, warning of the risk of a political disaster within NATO. The Russian embassy has expressed concern about the strengthening of the military presence in the Arctic, while British Prime Minister Starmer states that the goal is to deter Russian and Chinese activity.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen points out that the defense of Greenland is a common concern of the NATO alliance, and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen clearly says: “Greenland does not want to be owned by the US or under American administration.” It is obvious that the territory remains at the center of geopolitical tensions between the USA, Europe and Russia.
