A drone attack caused a fire at an oil warehouse in the western Russian city of Penza on Friday morning, with no casualties, the region’s governor said.
Videos on social media showed a column of flames curling from an oil storage site in the eastern suburbs of Penza, about 618 kilometers from the front line.
Officials did not elaborate on the origin of the drones, but Russia’s defense ministry said its air defenses intercepted at least 12 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over the Penza region.
Ukraine, which has attacked Russian energy infrastructure during the nearly four-year war in an attempt to drain the country’s war finances, did not immediately comment.
– Around four o’clock in the morning, a drone attack caused a fire in an oil warehouse in Penza. According to preliminary data, there are no victims or injured – said Governor Oleg Melnichenko on Telegram.
Relatively cheap Ukrainian drones have caused billions of dollars in damage to Russian oil and gas facilities.
Kiev claims the attacks are just retaliation for Russian attacks on its own energy system.
Russia’s bombing of Ukraine’s energy grid in recent weeks has left thousands of people without heating and electricity, reports AFP.
