Russia and Ukraine said on Thursday that they had carried out a new exchange of the bodies of their war dead, a regular practice that allows families of those killed on the battlefield to bury their loved ones.
According to reports from both countries, Russia handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Ukraine, while Kiev handed over the bodies of 38 Russian soldiers to Moscow, Kremlin adviser Vladimir Medinsky said, according to Reuters.
Medinski posted a photo of the exchange on Telegram, showing white refrigerators parked in a snow-covered area next to a forest, while people in white protective suits stood around them.
The Ukrainian Coordinating Center for the Exchange of Prisoners confirmed that the exchange of bodies had taken place, stating on Telegram that Russia had handed over 1,000 bodies to Kiev that, according to Moscow, were those of dead Ukrainian soldiers.
Although Kiev and Moscow regularly exchange the bodies of the dead, the last exchange of prisoners of war took place in October 2025.
Both sides accuse each other of delaying new exchanges of prisoners of war.
