Putin: Ukraine is punishing Europe because it won’t sign the treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that by the end of the year there is no time left to sign a new contract on gas transit through Ukraine, and he blamed that country for not extending the contract that supplies gas to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria.

“They have announced that they will not renew the contract,” Putin said, adding that Kiev is punishing Europe with this move.

The current five-year transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine expires by the end of the year, Index writes.

“There is no contract and it is impossible to conclude it in three, four days,” Putin said in a televised address.

The quantities of Russian gas that come to Europe via Ukraine are relatively small. In 2023, Russia sent about 15 billion cubic meters of gas through this route, only eight percent of the total amount of Russian gas that arrived in Europe via various routes in 2018 and 2019.

The Soviet-era Urengoy-Pomari-Uzhgorod pipeline brings gas from Siberia through the city of Suzh, now controlled by Ukrainian military forces in Russia’s Kursk region. It then goes through Ukraine to Slovakia, where the gas pipeline expands to the Czech Republic and Austria.

Russia is ready to deliver gas through Ukraine to any customer, but said the lawsuit makes it impossible, Putin said.

Putin also said that Russia is ready to supply Europe with gas through Poland, the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline.
