The latest report by the British company Quotezone.co.uk, which deals with the analysis of travel insurance, shows that Italy is currently at the top of the list of the most risky countries for the theft of wallets and valuables.
According to the collected data, the most dangerous place for tourists is the legendary Trevi Fountain in Rome, which many describe as a “bait” for pickpockets. The huge number of visitors and crowds allow thieves to operate unnoticed, which is the reason why Italy took the first place on the list.
Right behind it is France, and the most problematic location is the Eiffel Tower in Paris. More than 800 tourists have reported cases of pickpocketing in its surroundings, which are full of visitors throughout the year. On the Internet, travelers often warn each other to take special care of their belongings, because pickpockets and fraudsters are common on the streets.
Third place was taken by Spain, where Barcelona has been considered a city with a serious problem of petty crime for years, especially in tourist areas.
The research was done based on the comments of travelers who mentioned the words “pickpocketing” or “theft” on platforms like TripAdvisor. That data was then compared with the number of tourists who visit each country annually, in order to get a more accurate picture of the risk.
“Our research revealed surprising results. Italy has the most pickpockets, although France and Spain have significantly more tourists,” said Greg Wilson, founder and managing director of Quotezone.co.uk.
