Pope Leo on Sunday called on world leaders to use the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics to promote peace, urging those in power to take concrete steps towards de-escalation and dialogue.
Milan and the Alpine resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo will host the Games from February 6 to 22.
After his weekly prayer, according to Reuters, the pope said major sporting events, including the Olympics, carry a “powerful message of brotherhood” and can rekindle hope for a “world at peace,” recalling the ancient tradition of the Olympic truce.
“The Olympic truce is an ancient custom that accompanies the holding of the Games,” the pope said, adding:
“I hope that those who care about peace between nations and hold positions of power will take concrete steps towards de-escalation and dialogue”.
