“It seems to me that we will not be able to understand each other. I am a free man who serves the Hungarian people. You are a man in a desperate situation who cannot or does not want to bring the war to an end for the fourth year, despite the fact that the American president provided all possible help for that,” Orban told Zelensky.
“Therefore, no matter how flattering we are, we cannot support your war effort. The Ukrainian people, of course, despite your carefully chosen insults, can still count on us to continue to supply your country with electricity and fuel, and to continue to help refugees coming from Ukraine,” Orban wrote. He concluded the message with the words: “Life itself will decide the rest and everyone will get what they deserve.”
Orban’s announcement followed Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the Ukrainian president criticized some European allies, including Hungary. In his speech, Zelenski said that “the forces that want to destroy Europe do not lose a single day” and that they can also act within the European Union.
“It must be said clearly: any Viktor who lives off European money, while selling out European interests, deserves a slap on the hat. And even if someone feels comfortable in Moscow, we should not allow European capitals to become little Moscows,” said Zelensky, alluding to the Hungarian prime minister.
In the same speech, the Ukrainian president also criticized the broader European response to Russian aggression, judging that Europe, instead of a unified stance against Russia and building a real global power, remains a “fragmented kaleidoscope of small and medium-sized powers.”
