China’s economy grew by 5.0 percent in 2025, in line with the set goal and focusing on foreign demand, despite trade threats, official data showed.

Beijing had set a growth rate of around five percent for 2025, reports HINA.

Towards the end of the year, growth slowed down and in the fourth quarter, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 4.5 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, the weakest in three years. In the third quarter, it had grown by 4.8 percent.

At the quarterly level, GDP increased by 1.2 percent in the period from October to December.

In 2025, as a whole, industrial production increased by 5.9 percent, and retail sales by 3.7 percent. Investments in fixed assets decreased by 3.8 percent, and those in real estate by as much as 17.2 percent.

In December, industrial production increased by 5.2 percent, and retail sales by only 0.9 percent.

Official trade data released last week showed China was resilient to tariff tensions in 2025, ending the year with a record trade surplus of $1.19 trillion.

Exports to the US fell by 20 percent last year, but the drop was more than offset by shipments to Africa and ASEAN members.

The World Bank forecast last week that China’s GDP growth would slow to 4.4 percent in 2026, warning that real estate challenges, weak earnings prospects, weak labor markets and trade policy uncertainty could linger longer than expected and weigh on spending and investment.
