German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in his speech at the forum in Davos that the world has entered an era of great power politics, in which Russia and China challenge the position of the United States of America (USA), and that Europe must increase competitiveness and invest in defense.
Merz addressed the participants of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he warned that the old world order is disintegrating at an astonishing rate.
He pointed out that the pole position of the USA is being challenged by Russia and China.
– We have entered the era of great power politics – he said, adding that the new world of great powers is based on power, strength and, when necessary, force, and that it is no longer “a comfortable place”.
The German chancellor emphasized that the Russian aggression against Ukraine marks the beginning of a new era, but that the changes go much deeper.
He also reminded that China, through strategic planning, has positioned itself among the great powers, while the US responds to the challenges of other great powers by radically shaping its foreign and security policy.
In the new geopolitical order, Merz urged Europe to remain united.
– Europe and its partners with similar attitudes must stand closer to each other – he said, adding that European countries must do more to make their economies competitive and massively invest in defense capabilities.
Merz warned that “a world in which only power decides is a dangerous place” and recalled the Nazi regime in Germany from 1933 to 1945, which dragged the world into a “black abyss.”
At the same time, he called on Europe not to give up on the NATO alliance and its relations with the USA, reports DW.
