German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that 80 percent of the more than 900,000 Syrian citizens in Germany should return to their homeland in the next three years.
At a news conference with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Berlin on Monday, Merz said the leaders agreed that over a “long-term period of the next three years” about “80 percent of Syrians currently in Germany should return to their homeland.”
– That was also the wish of President Shara – said Merz, adding that “those Syrians who want to stay in Germany and who are well integrated will be able to stay in Germany”.
Germany has been one of the main destinations for Syrian refugees fleeing the devastating civil war, with around one million arriving in the country during the rule of dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Calls for Syrian nationals to leave Germany increased in conservative and far-right circles after al-Assad was ousted in late 2024 by a coalition led by al-Sharaa.
