Many participants expressed their support for Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last shah of Iran who was deposed in the 1979 revolution. Pahlavi, who lives in exile in the United States, has been trying to establish himself as a leading opposition figure in the midst of unrest in Iran in recent months.
Several solidarity rallies were held in Cologne, and several hundred people participated in each one. Protests also took place in Berlin, Frankfurt and Bielefeld, indicating a wide geographic spread of support for the Iranian protesters.

The rallies in Germany reflect growing international support for the protests in Iran, where rampant inflation and the collapse of the national currency have fueled strong anger against the regime.

Protests that began over Iran’s economic woes turned into violent riots, and security forces responded with a brutal crackdown on anti-government gatherings. According to activists, more than 3,400 people have been killed since the protests broke out at the end of December.
