According to information from political sources, Macron’s decision is related to current tensions between European countries and the Trump administration, especially due to the issue of Greenland and announcements by the American president about the possible takeover of that territory, which is under the sovereignty of Denmark.
Trump sent invitations for membership in the Peace Committee to a number of world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as the leaders of Poland, Slovenia and Israel. However, most of the invitees have so far not made a public statement, while Macron is the first to officially refuse participation.
The American president presents the Peace Committee as an alternative to the United Nations, with the idea that the new body mediates in global crises and conflicts, including the reconstruction of Gaza. However, it is not yet known how this committee would function in practice or how it would implement any decisions.
The White House has not yet released details on the structure, powers and working methods of the Peace Committee, while Macron’s move further points to deepening differences between the United States and key European allies.
