In a post on the X social network, Macron said he gave “full support to the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and Christians in the Holy Land”, saying they were prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
In the same message, the French president condemned the actions of the Israeli authorities, stressing that such decisions contribute to, as he stated, “the alarming spread of violations of the status quo of the holy places in Jerusalem.”
“The free practice of religion in Jerusalem must be guaranteed for all religions,” Macron said.
His reaction comes at a sensitive time, when issues of access and rights to religious ceremonies in holy places are again in the focus of the international public, especially during major religious holidays.
As a reminder, Jerusalem has a special significance for the three great monotheistic religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, which is why any decision concerning the holy sites often causes strong political and diplomatic reactions.
