Girona spent Christmas in the relegation zone of La Liga, and Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković came under fire.
The year 2025 was a real nightmare for Girona. A club that was until recently one of the biggest surprises of La Liga and a participant in the Champions League, today, due to his own mistakes, he is among the candidates for relegation.
The respected Spanish newspaper AS writes how Girona faced a problemwhich is common to many mid-table clubs that qualify for Europe. After a historic season and placement in the Champions League, the consequences arrived.
Last season they barely avoided relegation, they stayed in the league only because they played against the already written off Valladolid, and in the last 16 games they scored only two winsand the problems continued in the second part of 2025.
Coach Michel and his staff failed to reset the mentality of the players, so they started the new season with only one win in 11 games. Despite a slight improvement in the last month, they spent Christmas in the relegation zone.
There are two reasons for this, the first – obvious a balanced team was not builtand in addition, many reinforcements did not live up to expectations. AS claims that the goalkeeping position stands out:
Livaković was brought in as competition for Gazzaniga, but he hasn’t even made an appearance yet. The Croatian goalkeeper, who refused to play so that he could leave this winter, it turned out to be a complete failure.
Another reason is the fact that many reinforcements arrived at the last minutei.e. after the championship had already started, so they could not adapt in time, and the team had already started accumulating defeats at that time.
They add that the problems in the goalkeeping position also caused problems in the defense, they have a goal difference of -18:
Gazzaniga was often the target of criticism, but with Livaković’s unwillingness to play and Krapvytsov’s injury, Míchel had no other choice. Gazzaniga defended because he was the only goalkeeper available, writes AS, reports Gol.hr.
All this affected Michel, whose coach’s chair is shaking dangerously.
