The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that about 70,000 Palestinians had been killed during the war in the Gaza Strip, a figure largely in line with Gaza’s health ministry estimates, which Israel has previously questioned.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following an attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. According to Gaza health authorities, at least 71,662 Palestinians were killed during the war.
While admitting a death toll of approximately 70,000, the Israeli military disputed UN estimates of civilian casualties and said no healthy people starved to death during the war.
The Gaza Ministry of Health and several international organizations claim that the vast majority of the dead were civilians. Israel, however, claims that around 25,000 of those killed were Hamas fighters.
A truce reached with American mediation has been in effect since October 10 in Gaza, reports the al-Arabiya TV network.
