The National Commission for the Markets and Competition of Spain (CNMC) announced that it has opened an investigation against UEFs for suspicion that she tried to limit competition in European football competitions, opposing the Super League project.
“The CNMC explores UEFA regarding the possible distortion of competition in the organization of European football competitions,” the statement of this state body is stated.
The procedure was initiated after the company “A22 Sports Management”, the main promoter of the European Super League project. In the spotlight, among other things, the agreement that UEFA allegedly concluded with nine European clubs with the aim of preventing them from organizing or participating in alternative competitions.
CNMC adds that the investigation also includes a “series of measures” which UEFA allegedly introduced to support clubs to comply with this ban, including threats of exclusion from its official competitions.
After the preliminary analysis of the available information, the CNMC states that there are “indications of possible violations of competitive law”, but points out that the opening of the procedure “does not prejudice the outcome of the investigation.
The Super League project, which initially supported 12 clubs, and Barcelona, was presented in 2021. as an alternative to the Champions League, but provoked great resistance in the football public and the fans.
Six English clubs soon withdrew under pressure from domestic and European institutions, followed by others.
In May 2024. year, the Spanish court ruled that FIFA and UEFA “abused the dominant position”, relying on the European Union’s Court of Justice, which assessed that the ban on superleague violates European law.
Despite earlier failures, the idea of an alternative competition revived in late 2023. years, when “A22 Sports Management” announced a new project called “Unify League”, which would include 64 clubs arranged in three leagues.
