In the school year 2025/2026. in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are a total of 548 registered preschool institutions with 48,246 children. Compared to the previous school year, the number of children using preschool institutions increased by 5.4 percent, and the number of teachers increased by 6.9 percent.
Out of the total number of children in pre-school education, 56.9 percent are enrolled in public institutions, while 43.1 percent are enrolled in private institutions.
In the current school year, a total of 3,995 teachers were employed in preschool institutions, 1,619 in public and 2,376 in private preschool institutions.
There were 9,964 children waiting for a place in preschool institutions, which is 14.4 percent more than the previous school year, and the stated number of children was not accepted due to the capacity being filled. However, as stated in the explanation, that number does not correspond to the actual number of children, because children can be enrolled in several preschool institutions at the same time.
13,538 children attended the program for children in the year before starting school. Of the total number of children in the program, 9,398 children attended preschool and this program at the same time, while 4,133 children attended only the program for children in the year before starting school, according to data published by the BiH Statistics Agency.
