In Berlin, many emergency reception centers were overwhelmed, and citizens arrived with various broken bones from falls on the ice, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported. After the previous two days of drizzle and freezing on the ground blocked traffic and caused pedestrians to fall, the ice zone has spread from the north to the south, towards the federal states of Thuringia, Saxony and Hesse.
“Today we mainly dealt with accidents related to ice,” said a police spokesman in Saxony. In eastern Hesse, in Schenklengsfeld, a 19-year-old man drove his car off the road due to icy conditions. The vehicle overturned several times, and the driver and his 20-year-old passenger, who was also seriously injured, were transported to the hospital.
Already the night before, numerous traffic accidents occurred due to slippery roads, especially in the north of the country. The German Meteorological Service warns that temperatures may drop below zero today, and it will be even colder in places in the south of the country.
Since the middle of the week, most of Germany, especially the eastern part, is under the influence of an anticyclone from the east, which can lower temperatures to minus 10 degrees. Forecasters are also predicting heavy snowfall across the country from the middle of next week.
