Germany Police in the city of Gera explores the case of attempting to murder after a man on Sunday morning in the tram, a woman with flammable liquid and lit, inflicting life-threatening injuries.
Police in the Federal Province of Thuringia, where Gera is located, says the suspect attacker is probably married to a woman and is 46 years old.
Police spokesman said that the 46-year-old woman was transferred to a helicopter to the hospital after the attack, whose motive remains unclear.
The investigation was ongoing, she added a spokesman, writes DW.
There were no other injuries in the attack, which occurred for about 10 hours local time (09:00 UTC).
Other travelers in the tram pressed the emergency stop button after the attack, which the suspect used to escape, according to the spokesperson.
The vehicle driver reacted quickly and began to shut down the flames using the extinguishing apparatus, she said.
The woman got medical help on the spot before being transferred to the hospital, she added a spokeswoman.
It was said that other passengers and drivers were given psychological assistance.
Gera is located in the eastern part of the German Federal Province of Thuringia, about 60 km (37 miles) south of Leipzig.
